USA Etiquette > Gift Giving
  • Americans exchange gifts with family and close friends on birthdays, anniversaries, on major holidays such as Christmas and Chanukah, and at other important events in a person's life.
  • Family gift giving usually includes only the nuclear family.
  • A gift can be a simple card and personal note or something more elaborate for someone with whom you’re closer.
  • The value is related to the level of personal relationship.
  • Gift giving isn’t usually an elaborate event, and gifts are usually opened on the spot.
  • Wrap in any colour you like.
  • When dining at someone’s home, bring a good box of chocolates, a bottle of wine, or flowers or a potted plant.
  • Send flowers ahead, so they may be displayed at the event.
  • A small gift for the children is a nice gesture.
