Meeting People
Greetings are casual, usually just a handshake and a warm smile.
Greetings include a simple “Hello” or “How are you?” and a greeting that comments on the time of day.
If someone asks how you are, they don’t mean it literally. It is best to respond “fine” or “good”.
Regional differences may come into play, although Americans are mobile and tend to bring their home greetings with them.
Americans don’t generally hug or kiss unless they have a strong personal relationship.
When invited to a gathering, your host or hostess may introduce you to a person or two and then expect you to introduce yourself.
When leaving, you can give a general wave rather than saying good-bye to each person individually.
