United Kingdom Etiquette > Gift Giving
  • The British exchange gifts between family members and close friends for birthdays and Christmas. The gift need not be expensive.
  • When invited to someone's home, bring a box of good chocolates, a good bottle of wine or champagne, or flowers to the hostess.
  • If the invitation is to a formal dinner, you might not want to bring wine as the host will have selected the wines for the evening.
  • If invited to a dinner party and you plan to give flowers, you might want to send them in advance, so they may be displayed that evening.
  • A small gift for the children isĀ appreciated, but not expected.
  • Gifts are opened when received.
