Overview of Educational SystemEducation is compulsory for students ages 5 to 16 in England, Scotland and Wales and 4 to 16 in Northern Ireland.
England and Wales:
The school system is comprised of:
- Primary school - ages 5 to 11.
- Secondary school - ages 11 to 16.
- Sixth Form - for students planning to go to university. Students choose four subjects to study intensely for two years. At age 18, they will take GCE Advanced Level ('A level') examinations in these subjects, or the GCE Advanced Supplemental ('AS') examinations, which cover subjects with the same depth and rigor as A Levels, but include half of the content. These results are the basis of assessment for university entrance.
Schools are either government operated or public (what is considered private schools in most cultures). State-run schools are often called comprehensives. Many public secondary schools are single-sex boarding schools.
At 16, students take a series of comprehensive exams, usually 7 or more, called the General Certificate of Secondary Educations (GSCE) exams.
International Baccalaureate (IB) is similar to A Levels in that it is a final two-year course for entry to university. It is administered by the International Baccalaureate Office.
Scotland
The Scottish educational system consists of:
- Primary school - ages 5 to 12.
- Secondary school - ages 12 to 16, following which students take a series of Standard or Ordinary grade examinations.
- Students must continue their educational program until age 18. This may include full- or part-time vocational education, employment with on-the-job training, employment with release program for study, or further secondary education. University-bound students typically continue with a fifth and sometimes a sixth year of secondary education. During this time, students prepare to take SCE higher grade examinations in 5 subjects.
