The UK’s population is approximately 60 million and is expected to grow to nearly 70 million by 2025. Along with much of Western Europe, the population is aging due to longer life expectancies and reduced birth rates. Nonetheless, the UK’s population has grown by 0.4% per year since 2001. Nearly 90% of the population is English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish. Ethnic minorities represent about 6% of the overall population, most coming from Commonwealth countries. The largest ethnic minorities are of from the Indian subcontinent, followed closely by people of African descent or the Caribbean.
Nearly 70% of the population is nominally Christian comprised mainly of the Church of England, Church of Scotland, Church of Wales, Catholic, Protestant, or other Christian denominations. About 15% of the population claims to have no religious affiliation. About 5% are Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, or Jews. People from non-Christian religions are more likely to live in England than in Scotland or Wales. Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Sikhs are concentrated in London and other large urban areas.
